This is the second hand knitting class I’ve attended with Linda - my first course was in June 2017. I knew the basic knit and purl stitches when I started but I couldn’t read a pattern properly. I can now read a pattern, use circular and double pointed needles, join new balls of wall, weave in ends, decrease and increase, count the rows and make tension squares. I’ve made a baby hat and I’m two thirds of my way through a poncho. Linda is a fantastic and inspiring teacher, endlessly patient and quick to spot where you’ve gone wrong and come up with solutions. I have made huge progress and thoroughly enjoy the sessions.

Learn, sample and develop your skills in a variety of traditional and contemporary patchwork and quilting techniques using both machine and hand stitching.
Design and assemble a quilt or complete one you have already started. You will receive expert advice and guidance on traditional and contemporary quilting and patchwork techniques and methods, on choosing and sourcing fabrics and other materials and on quilt design and execution.
This course is not for complete beginners: it is designed for those who have already learnt the basics of patchwork & quilt construction and are competent at using a rotary cutter with an acrylic ruler and cutting mat, and know how to use a sewing machine to sew an accurate 1/4inch seam.

Linda teaches a whole programme of stand-alone short Textiles Crafts courses at Adult Learning Lewisham that run throughout the year- including patchwork and quilting, knitting, hand stitching, machine embroidery and other embellishment techniques. She has recently developed and taught a fascinating and experimental new workshop class on natural dyeing techniques- using plant materials to achieve amazing colour results- and this technique plays a large part in her own current work. Her learners frequently feedback on the motivational and supportive way that Linda teaches- and just how inspirational they find both her own work and the range of teaching materials and resources she encourages them to use.

NATURAL DYEING WORKSHOP
Brockley Rise Centre | Forest Hill

This experimental taster course is an ideal introduction to textile dyeing for new learners, and would also be an ideal complement to other textiles courses such as hand stitched and machine embroidery techniques or patchwork & quilting. You will learn how to prepare different fabrics, yarns & threads for dyeing using a range of different plant materials. You will create beautiful subtle colour variations using, for example, avocado stones, onion skins and other plant materials (depending on the season and what is available). Techniques will cover: preparing a dye bath & how to dye fibres in it, how to mordant (fix) and modify the colour of the dyed fibres.
No previous experience of fabric dyeing is necessary- just a keen interest in textile techniques & a willingness to experiment.
